Now that The Expendables has safely crossed the $100m barrier at the US box office, and now that the film has given Sylvester Stallone his biggest hit in a long, long time, the focus remains on the already-planned sequel. For Stallone has a job on his hands to top the cast from the first film and it's clearly something that's not far from his mind.

We already know that he's hinted, via his new Twitter stream, that he'd like Bruce Willis to have a more substantive part in The Expendables 2.

But the latest names being banded around? Well, try Mike Tyson for a start, whose hat Sly threw into the ring and then seemingly chucked it straight back out. "How tough is Mike Tyson? ........EXPENDABLES tough?", he asked, before later going on to post that "Always experimenting. Mike T is not a sound fit. In my life I have been wrong more then RIGHT but I usually get lucky when it counts."

So, who next? How about John Travolta, whose name has now been mentioned in association with the project? But when asked about his potential involvement with the film, Stallone replied "NO, DON'T THINK SO."

Yet, he does hint that he will look to use more UFC stars in the next film. And he's, perhaps jokingly, suggesting that Ryan Seacrest - a US radio and TV host - could make his way into the next film. The tone of the Tweets, however, you can judge for yourself: "RYAN SEACREAST [sic] is not want you think. HE is TOUGH as S---! He is in TEN times better shape JCVD and would most likely whip him. Seriously!", adding "Why would I put JCVD, and I do like him, in EXPENDABLES when I know SEACREST could destroy the one time great. ASK STEVE AUSTIN, he knows."

As things stand, Stallone is still working on the director's cut of the first movie, but his thoughts do appear to be very much with the second. And we'll keep you fully informed as fresh developments appear....

producer of Ben Affleck's new crime-drama The Town, out on September 17, and we asked him about the planned sequels to two of his big hits for 2010, Clash of the Titans and Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables.
When questioned as to what Sylvester Stallone may have planned for the sequel to the surprise summer hit The Expendables (which will probably be Lionsgate's second highest-grossing movie of all time very soon), we got a minor update. "I saw Avi Lerner this morning, who deserves all the credit for it," Iwanyk responded. "He really went on the line for the movie. He told me, 'We're doing a sequel, we're doing it right away.' I haven't talked to Sly at all about what's going to happen in the sequel. It's going to rock and you can just imagine in your head who will be in that cast in addition to the people who are there now. But I'm not sure. There's a lot of excitement and I know that Avi and Sly want to go at it as soon as possible." "The thing about 'The Expendables' for us was that it was a movie we had at Warner Bros., and it was a dead project," he said about the background for the hit action film. "We had a lunch with Sly's agent and he said, 'Sly needs to go to work,' so we sent him and he turned it into 'The Expendables."

Sylvester Stallone is moving forward with plotting a sequel to The Expendables, which has now grossed an estimated $82 million domestically. According to his Twitter page, he’s busy thinking of the most dangerous places to set the film and trying to talk Bruce Willis into playing its super villain. Reasons why Bruce should say yes:

1. The Expendables ($35 million) outperformed 2007′s Live Free or Die Hard in its opening weekend ($33 million), and Live Free or Die Hard was Willis’ best live-action, non-cameo opening weekend since 1998′s Armageddon ($36 million). Moral: Audiences like to see Bruce Willis blow shit up, and Stallone will most definitely hand him a detonator (or 20).

2. As much as we like the young guns in The Expendables, there was a different kind of electricity when Stallone and Willis shared the screen. They are equals. And that makes for a good antagonist.

3. We’ve already established that Bruce’s character in the Expendables world is bald. We like him bald.

4. We’ve been trained to root for Bruce in action films. Having to root against him — interesting.

5. If this kind of ensemble movie doesn’t live up to expectations, fans will be disappointed (see: 2004′s Ocean’s Twelve), but we will get over it (see: George Clooney’s career since then). You’ve really got nothing to lose. Have fun, Bruce. Go play with Sly in some jungle.
